The Chicago Alliance of Visual Artists (CAVA), formerly the Senior Artists Network, has collaborated with the Old Town Art Center for a new show entitled “Art in Old Town:  Visions & Visionaries.”  One of my paintings–MoMA Reflections–was selected among the many works thought to best reflect the Old Town creative influence.

I hope you can join me at the opening reception on August 9 from 2 – 5 pm.  This reception and show promises to be an event you don’t want to miss.  Shirley Baugher, author of “At Home in Our Old Town” and Old Town neighborhood historian, will talk about Old Town and its rich history of artists including Ivan Albright and Roger Brown.

I studied at the Old Town School of Art with several of its excellent artist/teachers from roughly 2008 through 2012;  I also had a solo show at the Old Town Art Center last year.  As a benefactor of the creative energy and influence that permeates the Old Town Art Center, I am delighted to have been juried into this show.

Vierneisel’s 2014 Plein Air Paintings of Tuscany

In October 2014, I took a watercolor workshop with Evelyn Dunphy at Tenuta di Spannocchia in Tuscany.   For information about this special place see www.spannocchia.com; for information about the award-winning watercolor artist and remarkably gifted teacher, see www.evelyndunphy.com.   While I am primarily an oil painter, I also work in watercolor.  These are the plein air paintings I did at Spannochia in watercolor.

While in Tuscany, I also spent three days in Siena, a day in the Cinque Terrra visiting four of the villages along the Italian Riviera, and five days in Florence.  I will be adding more paintings inspired by the Tuscan landscape.

Bridges Approaching Dresden

Bridges Approaching Dresden

During my cruise along the Elbe River in 2012, I would walk through the small towns and cities along the river banks and ruminate about my German ancestors.  The flood of memories this trip inspired led me to begin painting the evocative images I had seen immediately upon my return.  These richly textured associations also led me to understand my fascination with the Chicago skyline to which I return again and again as a painter. Now I appreciate more deeply the power of place in my life.   Besides the sixteen paintings of Prague, Berlin and the vistas along the banks of the Elbe River, the exhibit also features paintings that capture Chicago and New York cityscapes, the desert terrain of the Palm Springs area, and imagined places.

Join me at my artist reception Sunday, August 10 from 2 – 5 pm to see the paintings in person and learn more about the inspiration for my art.  As you view my paintings, I hope you sense the emotion that these landscapes have engendered in me, enjoy the beauty of place, and possibly hear the echoes of memories they evoke in you.

Sandstone Cliffs on the Elbe

Sandstone Cliffs on the Elbe

“A Sense of Place” was first inspired by two paintings I did based on my Elbe river cruise in 2012.  Those paintings led to others.  Being in Germany triggered memories of my German heritage and the paintings just seemed to flow.  Of course, the vistas along the Elbe’s banks in the Czech Republic and Germany were also made for a landscape  painter–sunrises and sunsets, mile high clouds, old bridges, misty waters, and sandstone cliffs.  My photos from the trip along with the images from my sketch book were the inspiration for the Elbe River series.

This exhibit also features paintings that capture Chicago and New York cityscapes, the desert terrain of the Palm Springs area, and imagined places.  Come see the paintings, sense the emotion that these landscapes engendered in me, enjoy the beauty of place, and possibly hear the echoes of memories the images evoke in you.
