Empire State Building Reflections

The theme “Portals” developed over time. The first painting in this series was created in response to a photographic fluke.  I had jockeyed for position at the top of the Empire State building to capture the setting sun.  When I looked at my photo, I was surprised to see that I’d caught an image of a man reflected in the glass.  The juxtaposition of New York City at sunset and the image in the glass inspired this painting.

As I mounted a solo show at The New Studio in Evanston last year, I realized that I had been repeatedly painting windows, doorways, bridges, and archways.  Thus the idea of a show about portals was born.  I began to paint not just doorways and windows, but also holes, staircases, tunnels, and other passages that intrigued me.

Ile de Cite Metro Station Paris

Portals grab the eye.  We may look or pass through them unthinkingly.  Or we may peer into them wondering what is just around the corner or on the other side.  The Metro tunnel, the stairway, and arch of the underground station Ile de Cite, the first one built at the turn of the last century in Paris, are all portals contained in one of my more recent paintings on this theme.

“Portals” opens at the NSAL in the Winnetka Community House at 620 Lincoln Avenue, 1st floor, Winnetka, IL on August 15 and runs through September 17, 2017.  Gallery hours: Monday through Friday, 8 am – 8 pm; Saturday and Sunday, 9 am – 5 pm.  Ample free parking at the village lot on Lincoln Ave. adjacent to the center at which NSAL is located.
